Stevie stood on the shuttle, dark clouds obscuring her view of the City below as they drew closer to the Disc. She shifted from one foot to the other, wishing she could sit. Why did she continue giving up her seat to these people, to these obstructers of freedom who gladly worked for a system that would turn on them in a moment?
Because they didnât know. They didnât know the full truth about Mullen. Unlike her, they hadnât abused their power to obtain information.
A handful of women and men sat on one side of the shuttle, and another did the same on the other side. For weeks the arrangement had remained the same, ever since lawmakers had approved Mullenâs contemptible measure. Each side chatted amongst themselves, but not about work or anything that could be misconstrued by the other group.
Her fellow bureaucrats and terrorist hunters, those who rode the shuttle with her most days, had realigned themselves. Some moved to the left side of the shuttle, others to the right, but all in all a reshuffling had taken place and a new order of things had begun. Two factions had formed, there and at the Disc: those who supported Mullenâs measure, and those who opposed it. No one advertised such support or opposition, particularly the opposers, who sought to preserve their jobs and the power they came with. Nor did the developing divide show signs of conflict or acrimony on either side. Yet, the divide existed, and Stevie saw it.
Stevie saw it because she knew things. She knew from the DOAâs painstaking perusal of Disc emails that Jarrod Mullen and Colonel Yeoh didnât care for one another and that Mullen hoped to edge Yeoh out one day, just like heâd hoped to edge out Ronald Carr. Her coworkers had reorganized to be near those who shared their views, to feel solidarity with those who respected the same leaders. It had happened organically, rather than out of a bellicose, us-against-them mentality. But little did they know theyâd assigned themselves to a side in a slowly burgeoning war, one that would have future consequences.
Colonel Yeoh. Stevie had never worked with him or spoken to him one on one. However, she knew Yeoh to be polite and generally more pleasant than Mullen. People liked Yeoh. Seth liked Yeoh, and had a longstanding respect for him.
That gave Stevie some solace. Seth, despite turning his back on her, was still Seth. He tolerated the passing of Mullenâs measure and didnât worry about the potential for future abuses or infringements on their freedoms; however, he would ultimately align himself with Yeoh and with the military, many of whom didnât support the measure. Hopefully they would keep Mullen in check. More importantly, their influence might ensure Seth wouldnât feel compelled to rat her out or expose the DOA, when he could easily do both.
When the shuttle arrived at the Disc, Stevie followed the others to her floor, spotting Machine in the distance. She smiled at
